Department of Aquatic Resources

SLU, Department of Aquatic Resources, Coastal Laboratory, is looking for a biologist or a person with equivalent background and qualifications for a position as an environmental analyst at the office in Bua, Varberg municipality.

About the job

You will primarily work with field-related tasks such as biological and radiological environmental monitoring at the Ringhals nuclear power plant, the EU's data collection regulation, data collection from commercial fishing, as well as data collection within national and regional environmental monitoring. Additionally, you may work on several different environmental analysis projects at the department.

Fieldwork is a significant part of the job. This means participating in and also leading sampling along the coast (mainly the west coast but also in other parts of Sweden as needed), collecting various types of data through sampling programs on board commercial fishing boats as well as research vessels of various sizes, and other field assignments within the framework of SLU Aqua's activities. Fieldwork involves flexible working hours, travel, and may also include some weekend work.

The tasks also include biological sampling of various fish species, collection of radiological samples and their preparation, as well as being responsible for fishing gear, boats, and other sampling equipment used at the office.

The work also involves some office and computer work, as well as using databases and other technical tools.

The tasks may change over time according to the needs of the organization.

Your background

You have a strong interest in the marine environment and documented experience in fieldwork at sea and fishing and/or commercial fishing. As a person, you are responsible and good at communicating. You enjoy working in a team but are also comfortable working independently when required. You need to be meticulous, have a quick learning ability, be used to working systematically, and have a flexible approach. Personal qualities such as teamwork ability, attention to detail, and subject matter expertise are highly valued in the hiring process and should be exemplified in your application.

You should have:

  • a solid interest in fish and marine ecosystems
  • good boating skills
  • experience in fishing (sampling or commercial fishing)
  • experience handling fish
  • driver's license for passenger car (B manual)
  • good oral and written skills in Swedish
  • good oral skills in English

It is advantageous if you have:

  • a degree in biology or similar education
  • good species knowledge and good knowledge of fish in the North Sea and the Baltic Sea
  • experience operating console boats
  • experience in biological sampling of fish
  • current training in animal ethics
  • training in chemical handling
  • experience in quantitative analysis of images and/or video material
  • current safety training to work on fishing boats
  • driver's license with BE or B96 authorization
  • obtained the certificate for ship's officer class VIII

The Department of Aquatic Resources conducts environmental analysis, advice, research, and education in aquatic ecology with a focus on fish and shellfish. The department is SLU's largest and has employees at four main locations: Lysekil, Öregrund, Uppsala (Ultuna), and Stockholm (Drottningholm), as well as two field stations.

Our activities are strongly focused on data collection and analysis of fish, fishing, and ecosystems. The department is characterized by intensive collaboration with the surrounding community.
